Family Group Conferencing, supporting children and families - A Leeds perspective
Date: Friday 9th March 2018
Location: The Carriageworks, Electric Press, Millenium Square, Leeds, LS2 3AD
Cost: £100 per person, to include light lunch and refreshments
Arguably ‘family’ is the most under-utilised resource of the 21st Century. In Leeds our vision is to match physical regeneration with social generation. Our aspiration to be a Child Friendly City dictates that there is focused investment by the Council and local partners in the outcomes for children and families as a means of making Leeds a great place to live. Children’s Services are developing a new social contract with families who need additional support. This places significance on the nature of relationships and the importance of investing in whole family approaches.
The work of Children and Family Services is underpinned by a whole system restorative approach which gives value to the nature of relationships between staff and with families, with the underlying principles of treating people fairly, with dignity and whilst offering support and challenge.
Leeds has committed to offer Family Group Conferencing as a means of putting ‘partnership into practice’ and to enable families to come together to find solutions where there are concerns about children. As part of a three day European Exchange Leeds City Council Children and Family Services, in conjunction with the Family Rights Group, are pleased to announce a one day conference.
The Conference will explore the Leeds journey and use of Family Group Conferencing. There will be an evaluation overview by Dr. Kate Morris of Sheffield University and key-note speeches from Leeds staff. The afternoon will enable participants to choose two workshops to include:
- Family experiences of FGCs
- FGCs where there is domestic abuse and violence
- Creating a restorative culture and FGC
- Developing a young person’s service user group
There will also be opportunity to network with colleagues from the Gironde region in France, Sofia in Bulgaria, Berlin in Germany and staff from the Family Rights Group in London who with Leeds and other partners form part of an international FGC development project funded by Erasmus+.
