Making a difference for families this Christmas

Published: 7th December 2021

2 minute read

2021 has been another tough year and more families are struggling than ever before.

The number of children looked after in the care system is continuing to rise. Families across the country are finding it difficult to get the support they need. This includes kinship carers -grandparents, older brothers or sisters or other family members or friends who have stepped in to raise children who can’t remain at home with their parents. More than 180,000 children in the United Kingdom are raised in kinship care.

One of the ways we’re working to help them is through our incredible family panels. Our panel members are kinship carers, parents and family members who have decided to make a difference by using their experiences to help make sure that the system works better for children, young people and families.

Despite the pressures they’ve faced this year, they’ve continued to meet with politicians, practitioners and decision makers to shift attitudes, presumptions, policies and practice. They show how important it is to listen and learn from those whose lives are directly affected by our child welfare system.

We asked our panel members about why they got involved:

For this year’s Christmas appeal, we’re asking for your support to help us make sure the voices and experiences of children and families are heard at every level of the child welfare system.

Your donation will support:

  • Workshops for panel members to help them get the message across
  • Panel members working with local authorities and other public agencies to set up local family panels
  • Campaigning opportunities for families to speak directly to those in power.
