SGOs AND PASSPORTS

Unread post by jane brent » Fri Aug 23, 2013 7:18 pm

Hi. Does anyone know, if I can get a passport for my grandson, whom I have a SGO for. We have had the SGO for 6 and half years. We had permission from his mother to have his surname changed to ours, straight after the SGO was permitted. I want to take him abroad next year, but do I need any written consent from his mother, do I need her birth cert, or can I just send the copy of the SGO along the the deed poll to the passport office?

Do you really need the birth mothers birth cert ? Our grand daughters mother would never let us have it.

You can apply for a copy of the birth mothers birth certificate from the general registra office. They send you a document you can then use for the passport application.

Thank you for your help. I wasn't sure if I needed a written letter from the mother. stating that she gave permission for us to change his name (which was sorted by our solicitor just after the SCO was granted) she did actually give permission then, but I know that if I did need it now, it would be a different story.

We got a passport for our nephew once he came into our care, obtaining a copy of his birth certificate from the registry office. We had to attend our local centre in person, and as his mum had a passport (and we knew her date of birth) the lady on the desk was able to check her identity to confirm our nephew's status. We got the passport specifically without telling parents, as they would have tried to block us - they were not happy when they found out, but as SGO, we were the only ones with a right to apply for it on behalf of our nephew.
