Re: Adoption
Dear Sass
Thank you for your post. You have posted on the parents’ discussion board by mistake; as you are a grandparent with a Special Guardianship Order for your granddaughter the best place for you to post and to get support and advice from other relatives is our specialist family and friends carers discussion board .
It can be possible for a grandparent who is a Special Guardian to adopt the child they are caring for but it is not the norm. When a court is deciding to make an order for a child they consider which is the best order for her and it seems in your granddaughter’s situation they made a SGO. Adoption is usually not considered appropriate when a close relative is caring for a child because it changes family circumstances and could be very confusing for a child.
If you are considering this because of some difficulties you are having at the moment you may find some helpful advice in our DIY guide to Special Guardianship for family and friends carers advice sheet, by posting on the family and friends carers’ discussion board or by calling our freephone advice helpline on 0808 801 0366 Mon-Fri 9.30 a.m. to 3.00 p.m.
If you do want to apply to adopt you would have to make a new court application. You can find out more on Child Law Advice’s website or by contacting their helpline on 0300 330 5480.
With best wishes
