Can I , 43 yr old grandma, receive income support?

Unread post by BabiCarrie » Wed Jun 12, 2013 5:14 pm

I am about to take over the role of raising my grandchildren (aged 2 1/2 and 4) to enable my daughter to go and complete her studies. This should take 2 years, during which time I wont work, but provide childcare. My question is simply- am I able to claim the income support/rent/council tax benefit in place of my daughter who currently receives these benefits. If so, if anyone knows what I must do in order to qualify e.g. must I legally adopt the children, or can the 'handover' be done more amicably and without need for changing the permanent legal guardian? My thanks to anyone who can advise. : )

Hi BabiCarrie

Welcome to the parents board.

You say that you plan to take over the care of your grandchildren when your daughter goes to study. It would be advisable if she can write a letter confirming she is consenting to the children going into your care and you both inform the benefits office that she wants all the benefits to be paid directly to you.

Once the children are placed with you, and you have further queries, you may want to post any further messages on the family and friends carer's board.

Best Wishes

Suzie
