Re: Child in need
Dear PamPam,
Welcome to the parents’ forum and thank you for your post. My name is Suzie and I am the online adviser at Family Rights Group. I hope that the following advice and information is helpful to you.
Firstly, congratulations on your pregnancy. I hope that you are keeping well.
You say that you do not know who the father is and you would like to know how this will affect the work that the social worker is doing with you.
If you do not know the identity of the baby’s father then the focus of the social worker’s involvement will be to look at your ability to care for the baby on your own when he or she is born. This will include considering your recent history and what the concerns were that led to the child in need plan. They will consider how you will manage when the baby is born and whether there is any additional support that you might benefit from.
Under the child in need process the social worker can only share personal information about you with other people if they have your consent to do so. This means that they cannot contact anyone who they suspect might be the father unless you consent to this. Ultimately it is best to be open and honest with the social worker, but if you do not know who the father is then of course it will not be possible for you to share this information with them.
If the father becomes known during your pregnancy, or once the baby is born, then he will be included in any assessments or support that is offered to you and your baby.
You may find it helpful to read information on our website about the child in need process HERE.
I hope that this is of some help. Please post again if you have any further queries or you can call our free, confidential adviceline on 0808 801 0366 (Monday to Friday, 9:30am – 3pm). We also have a webchat which is currently open on Monday and Thursday afternoons.
Best wishes,
Suzie
