Low risk sex offender
Hi I'm looking for some advice, my sister in law has just had a baby and because my brother is a registered sex offender the children's services are telling him to stay away from the house and he isn't allowed to see his partner or the baby when they are released from hospital, cs have told my brother that he isn't allowed to see any of them or go near the house, he's not allowed to see mum even without baby, so is now living in a van in this weather. The police have stated to the cs that he is very low risk, he has done everything he can by informing the police of everything and the police are backing my brother, and mum and baby can't come home from hospital as they haven't done a discharge assessment. How can cs have more power than the police when the police have all the ins and outs of any crimes

Dear Worried sister,
Welcome to the forum and thank you for your post. I am sorry to hear about the difficult time that your family are going through at the moment, and I hope that the following information is of some help to you.
When children’s services receive information that a parent is a registered sex offender they have a duty to carry out enquiries to ensure that no children are at risk of harm. Although any appropriate information will be shared by the police with children’s services it remains the duty of children’s services to carry out their own enquiries and assessment of the situation. They cannot rely on the police to tell them that he is low risk; they must gather all information and make their own assessment. It is not unusual for children’s services to recommend that contact between the offender and any children is either restricted or stopped for a period of time whilst they assess the situation.
You can find more information on our website HERE about children’s services investigations, and we have information HERE about children’s services involvement when there is concern about sexual abuse.
I hope that this is of some help. If you would like to speak with an adviser then please call our free, confidential helpline on 0808 801 0366 (Monday to Friday, 9:30am – 3pm), or you can post here again.
Best wishes,
Suzie

Re: Low risk sex offender
Was social work not involved with you sister in law before having the baby? Usually this is the case for people dating a SO whom have a child. I highly dislike social work! They do not play fair.. I feel for your family
