Are children's services Concerned about your child

Unread post by Frazor » Tue Apr 04, 2023 12:31 am

Social services have no concerns for my children because after 6 years it should be more than clear there are no Concerns, the reason they say they will not discharge the care order is because until they see my children's school attendance be at 100% when this year it was 75% last year was 85% and the absences were all authorised but yet that's still not good enough. They make my children's school life complicated and unfair because they invade my children's privacy. It's unfair

Dear Frazor

Thank you for your post and welcome to the discussion board. My name is Suzie, I am an online advise and will be responding to you today.

I am sorry to hear you feel children’s services are being unreasonable regarding your situation. Your children are subject to care orders . They remain living with you under these orders. You would like children’s services to discharge them. They do not agree with you and remain concerned about your children’s attendance at school. You feel this is not a justifiable reason for the care orders to remain in place.

It is positive that your children’s school attendance has improved and that you have followed school procedures to report their absences. I would encourage you to continue to work with them in this respect. Is a Education Welfare Officer involved. If so, what support (if any) are they and the school providing to ensure your children’s attendance continues to improve?

Whilst your children remain in you care, they hold the status of looked after children because of the care orders in place. They will have an independent reviewing officer (IRO) as part of this process, and one of their roles is to oversee the care plan for the children to make sure they are meeting their needs. It would be a good idea to discuss your views with the IRO to find out their opinion
and also to work with the social worker to understand what they would need to see achieved/evidenced for them to consider discharging the orders.

You could, if you wish, ask the court for permission to make an application to discharged the care order yourself. I have added some information HERE which explains this in fuller detail.

I hope the information provided is helpful to you. If you would like to speak to an adviser, please call our freephone advice helpline on 0808 8010366 (Mon – Fri, 9.30 am to 3.00 pm). Or, of course, you can post again on here.

Best wishes, Suzie

We have had absences used against us also - about the same kind of numbers 85%ish for my eldest

He is Autistic and not been supported properly in school. All absences have been the school suspending him for typical Autistic behaviour.

I asked for EHCP myself. The ed psych did their assessment and completely slatted the school, and said the same as me. That is he not being supported at all in school. There is a massive multi-page report detailing the recommendations for the draft EHCP that is being written.

The SW still likes to claim this means it is MY FAULT he has only 85% attendance, huh?! It's the school's fault for providing no proper support in school and doing unlawful suspensions!

Dear bananabiscuitscakes

Thank you for you further post. I am sorry to hear that your son is not being properly supported at school and that this has resulted in him being suspended at times due, you believe, to his unmet needs in relation to his autism.

I just wanted to let you know about some services which may be helpful to you or other parents about special educational needs e.g. IPSEA and also Child Law Advice’s Education service for education legal advice.

I hope this is useful.

Best wishes

Suzie
