Help please with social services x

Unread post by Starfish1111 » Thu May 25, 2023 2:41 pm

Hi, my Two children live with my mum for the past five years under an SGO this is because of I was in a domestic violence relationship and had mental health. Social services got involved because of my ex partner and the children went to live with my mum,
The final outcome at court was for me to seek help for my mental health a referral for ADHD and to get therapy. In these last five years I have completed all courses and have been free from domestic violence. I was going to go back to court of the children back. But the children are happy living with my mum so I haven’t gone back to court. I have been in a relationship for a year with a man I’ve known for 13 years. He has a child with another woman and he’s never been in trouble with the police or any domestic violence. I have just found out I am pregnant, and I’m worried sick social services are going to be involved . What is the worst thing that can happen I’ve heard horror stories and take your baby from birth. Will they get back involved again or do a pre-birth assessment also my Life Has can significantly changed I’ve done everything the judge ordered I just havent gone back to court.
Any advice please thank you

Dear Starfish111

Welcome to the parents’ discussion board and thank you for your post. My name is Suzie. I am Family Rights Groups’ online adviser. Congratulations on your pregnancy. I can see that you are very worried though.

Your two children live with your mum under a Special Guardianship. At the time the SGO was made there were concerns about the impact of your mental health needs and as you had been the victim of domestic abuse. You explain that in the 5 years since then you have made a number of changes in your life and followed all the recommendations made by the court. You are in a new relationship with a partner who is already a father and who you believe has no history of children’s services or police involvement.

From what you say, your current circumstances are quite different from when your children’s case was in court. However, as you have children who are not in your care, it is likely that children’s services will want to do a pre-birth assessment. It is a good idea for you to self-refer or do so jointly with your GP or midwife when you book in.

This advice on pre-birth assessments explains what to expect and provides suggestions on how to work with children’s services to demonstrate that you can care for your baby. Be prepared to cooperate with a pre-birth assessment if this is recommended and encourage your partner to engage also. Make sure you attend all your appointments and take up any support needed. If your family and your partner’s family are supportive of you then that is a positive too.

It is not possible to predict the outcome of an assessment but if there are no serious concerns then you may be offered Early Help or a child in need plan . It is only if there are serious concerns that the baby will suffer significant harm that child protection or care proceedings are begun.

The pre-birth assessment information linked above sets out all the possible different outcomes so have a look at this.

If you have any further questions if/when children’s services are involved please do post again or contact the advice service via the freephone advice line, webchat or advice enquiry..

I hope this helps

Best wishes

Suzie
