Family Rights Group welcomes new National Kinship Care Ambassador

Published: 7th October 2024

3 minute read

Family Rights Group welcomes the appointment of the first ever National Kinship Care Ambassador, Jahnine Davis.

Our Chief Executive, Cathy Ashley, and Public Affairs Manager, Jordan Hall, recently met with Jahnine to introduce Family Rights Group’s work, to hear about Jahnine’s ambitions for the role, and to discuss how we can work together.

Commenting on the announcement of Jahnine’s appointment, Cathy said:

“We are delighted that Jahnine Davis is the new National Kinship Care Ambassador. It is a significant moment to be celebrated.

“Jahnine will be a representative for children and their kinship carers in the heart of government, and an advocate for change in local authorities across the country. As someone with 25 years of experience of the children’s social care system, including in children’s rights and participation, and with lived experience of kinship care and the care system, we are confident she will be the experienced, determined champion kinship children and carers need.

“Moreover, her research specialism in safeguarding Black children will bring important understanding and insight to tackle the racial disparities which pervade kinship care.

“Family Rights Group looks forward to working with Jahnine to deliver for children and families across the country.”

About the National Kinship Care Ambassador

The creation of this new role was announced in December 2023 in the national kinship care strategy:

We will recruit the first ever National Kinship Care Ambassador to advocate for kinship carers and work directly with local authorities to improve services. The ambassador will be appointed in 2024 and will support government and local authorities to keep kinship carers at the heart of their services.

The National Kinship Care Ambassador will support individual local authorities to refine their services to improve the outcomes and experiences of kinship carers. Local authorities will benefit from bespoke, constructive advice and they will be able to meaningfully use this resource to make positive changes to their services. The ambassador will speak directly to local kinship carers, utilising existing forums where appropriate, before advising Directors of Children’s Services and other professionals on how they could best improve the experiences of kinship families.

The ambassador will have a deep understanding of kinship care and both local and national government. They will also have a good grasp of local innovation, working with local authorities to implement new ways of working and sharing best practice. They will make a difference to both kinship families and local government.

The Kinship Care Ambassador will also bring the voice of kinship carers into national policy making. They will advise government, using feedback from kinship carers and their experience.
