Build Not Break – Labour Party Conference 2025

Build Not Break: Fixing The Care System So All Children Have Lasting, Loving Relationships

Sunday 28th September – 5.45pm – Youth Zone and Skills Hub at the Deck, ACC Liverpool, Labour Party Conference 2025

Join us for our special event at Labour Party Conference 2025 in Liverpool, bringing together young people with care experience and policy makers. We’ll look at progress to date and next steps to create a child welfare system that builds loving relationships and breaks down the barriers to opportunity for all.

Family Rights Group’s event at Labour Party Conference 2025. The event is called Build Not Break: Fixing The Care System So All Children Have Lasting, Loving Relationships. It will be held on Sunday 28th September at 5.45pm in the Youth Zone and Skills Hub at the Deck, ACC Liverpool. The graphic shows an image of four teenagers huddled in a group in conversation with their arms around each other’s shoulders. A speaker list with profile photos is included over the top: Salma, care experienced; AJ – care experienced – and his Lifelong Links coordinator, Danny; Cathy Ashley OBE – Chief Executive of Family Rights Group; Cllr Marion Atkinson – Leader of Sefton Council; and Dr Jo Casebourne, Chief Executive of Foundations.

We all need people to turn to for practical and emotional support throughout the highs and lows of life.

Too often, children in care and young people leaving care are left isolated and alone. Important relationships are often broken when they enter the care system. Many are separated from their brothers and sisters, have to change school, or move far away from family and friends.

A lack of positive relationships increases the likelihood that young people experience difficulties in life – such as poor mental health, a tougher time at school, unemployment and homelessness.

But there is hope.

We know that if positive, loving relationships can be built and strengthened, then it increases the likelihood of care experienced young people thriving in adulthood. Lifelong Links, an innovative approach developed by Family Rights Group, does just that. Over 4000 children and young people have now benefited.

With over 100,000 children and young people in the care system across the UK, we have to do better to break down the barriers to opportunity for all children and young people.
