General Register Office

This is the government agency for England and Wales that is responsible for:

  • Maintaining a register of all births and deaths.
  • Maintaining a register of all marriages and civil partnerships.
  • Maintaining the Adoption Children Register. This is a record of all adoptions ordered by the courts since 1927. A certified copy of an entry is equivalent to a birth certificate for an adopted person.
  • Managing the Adoption Contact Register. This register enables adopted adults and birth families to get in touch with each other.
