General Register Office
This is the government agency for England and Wales that is responsible for:
- Maintaining a register of all births and deaths.
- Maintaining a register of all marriages and civil partnerships.
- Maintaining the Adoption Children Register. This is a record of all adoptions ordered by the courts since 1927. A certified copy of an entry is equivalent to a birth certificate for an adopted person.
- Managing the Adoption Contact Register. This register enables adopted adults and birth families to get in touch with each other.
