Initial family and friends care assessment

This is a first-stage assessment of possible kinship carers by children’s services.

The aim is to identify adults within a child’s network who might be able to:

  • Provide help and support to the child and family.
  • Care for the child long-term (if they cannot live safely with their parents).

This assessment is used to gather initial information about the possible kinship carers. This enables children’s services to then advise as to who should have a full assessment.

Initial assessments can be referred to as ‘viability assessments‘.
