Local protocol for assessment
All local authorities should publish this protocol document. It sets out arrangements for how cases will be managed when a child is referred to children’s services. This will be when they are referred for additional support (a ‘child in need’) or protection (child protection enquiries).
The protocol should explain:
- How assessments carried out by children’s services will link to other specialist assessments. For example, how a child in need assessment links to an assessment for an education, health and care plan.
- How the needs of disabled children, young carers and children involved in the youth justice system will be addressed.
- The assessment process for children returning home from care to live with their family.
