New support including free prescriptions for care leavers

Published: 23rd December 2025

2 minute read

Today the Government has announced a new package of support for care leavers. This includes:
  • Free prescriptions, dental care and eyecare for care leavers up to age 25.
  • A pilot to improve mental health support through closer working between councils and the NHS.
  • Paid supported internships and guaranteed interviews for care-experienced people in the NHS.

Cathy Ashley, Chief Executive of Family Rights Group, welcomed the news:

“We welcome that the Government is taking immediate action to do better by care experienced children and young people, taking its responsibilities seriously as a corporate parent.

“The reality is that we’re removing tens of thousands of children from their homes, schools and communities into the care system – and then badly failing them. The care system breaks rather than builds loving relationships leaving many care leavers isolated, split up from their brothers and sisters, friends, family and others who care about them.

“The measures announced by the Government today on free prescriptions and employment opportunities are an important step to tackle health inequalities and support young people who have had a tough start in life.

“Having people around us who we love and trust is central to all of our wellbeing, even more so at Christmas time. Family Rights Group’s Lifelong Links approach supports young people to build those lasting, loving relationships we all need. Improving mental health and reducing the risk of homelessness. The Government has invested in some local authorities to offer Lifelong Links and we urge them to take further radical action to ensure it is an offer to all.

“No young person should leave care without positive, loving relationships they can turn to for emotional and practical support.”
