Ann practised as a senior family law barrister at St Ives Chambers in Birmingham, specialising in care and adoption cases representing parents, grandparents, children and local authorities. For many years she was a lecturer and presenter on family law topics. She continues to write on family law and edits the St Ives Childcare newsletter.

She has two daughters and four grandchildren.
