An advocate is someone who helps parents, children or other family members get their views across when dealing with children’s services and other official agencies.

For example, an advocate can:

  • Help someone write letters or make telephone calls for them
  • Go to meetings with someone – for example, to help a parent have their say
  • Help someone challenge what social workers are saying
  • Help people understand what is going on.
