Section 17

This refers to Section 17 of the Children Act 1989. This section places a duty on children’s services to provide help and support to a child in need to safeguard the child and promote their welfare. This duty extends to providing help to their family where needed. A range of appropriate services may be provided, including financial assistance or housing.

Social workers may sometimes use the term ‘section 17’ as a shorthand way of referring to an assessment or the provision of services in relation to this duty.
