Youth detention accommodation
There are three types of youth detention accommodation:
- Secure children’s homes (for children aged 10 to 17).
- Secure training centres (for children aged 12 to 17).
- Young offender institutions (for young people aged 15 to 21).
If a child (aged up to 17) is charged with an offence and is refused bail, the child will be remanded either to local authority accommodation or youth detention accommodation (see remand).
The youth custody service has responsibility for placement of the child and for the delivery of secure services. The placement decision is based on information provided by the youth offending team. A child remanded to youth detention accommodation will become a looked after child.
